Margaret, of Littlehampton, West Sussex, told The Sun: “I heard an almighty bang and the next thing I know the whole roof has gone.

“Of all the houses on this street, just my luck it had to be mine.”

She was treated by paramedics whilst neighbours ran back into the house to save her stricken cat, Mittens.

Margaret has since been told that it will be two months before she can return to her home – where she has lived since she was 70.

She is expected to move into temporary accommodation as work begins to repair her property, but is currently staying up in a nearby hotel.

Investigators from the Tornado and Storm Research Organisation said they were called to the seaside town on Sunday.

They have since categorised it as a T4 tornado.

A T4 has the strength to cause serious damage, uproot and snap trees, carry debris of up to 2km and even pick up cars.

Neighbour Chris Grayson, 45, said: “I opened the door to see what was going on and bits of debris just started flying into the house.

“It was so violent I had to slam the door shut.

“I had never seen anything like it – the trees had gone completely horizontal.”

Her son, Ian Joslin, 65, said: “When we got the call, we couldn’t believe what we were hearing.

“The emergency services were absolutely brilliant. They did a brilliant job of making sure she was ok.”
