Local media reported the deceased man was named Ramkunwar Singh and he fed the monkey bread at Amroha, a city in northern India, for two months before he died.
The unlikely pair also spent time playing together each day.
Video shared to X/Twitter depicted the monkey laying on the road by Singh’s dead body which was covered in a yellow mortuary sheet.
The monkey was then filmed clinging to Singh’s sheet-covered body as it was transported down a windy motorway.
At the site of the funeral, the monkey stayed close to Singh’s body and sat by a wailing woman understood to be a family member.
The animal stood by a dam as a group of men built what appeared to be a funeral pyre.
Local media reported the monkey shed tears when he visited their usual spot and learned of Singh’s death.
Footage of the monkey in mourning has gone viral, with many overwhelmed by his display of grief.
One X/Twitter user wrote: “Animals are [more] faithful than humans.”
Another said: “This proves that animal are better than humans. This is a live example.”
