Local police had contacted the Secret Service after spotting a “suicidal individual” who may have been going to Washington from Indiana.
His vehicle was located by agents in the early hours of Saturday morning near 17th and F streets in Washington, a preliminary statement said.
After locating the vehicle, agents shortly came across the suspect who had walked north toward Pennsylvania Avenue.
When met by federal agents, the gunman threatened them with a weapon.
“They also saw an individual on foot matching the description nearby,” the statement said.
“As officers approached, the individual brandished a firearm and an armed confrontation ensued, during which shots were fired by our personnel.”
Chief of Communications Anthony Guglielmi confirmed that no agents were harmed in the showdown.
But, the condition of the gunman is “unknown” after he was taken to an area hospital.
The man has not been publicly identified by law enforcement.
A team at the Washington Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the incident, the federal agency said.
The U.S. Sun has reached out to the police department for an update.
The incident took place near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, just a block west of the West Wing of the White House.
President Donald Trump was at his Florida home in Mar-a-Lago, at the time of the incident.
It is unclear what the gunman’s motives were, but it comes just months after a string of assassination attempts against the Republican.
On July 13, 2024, gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks shot an AR-15 at Trump while he spoke at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Trump’s ear was only grazed in the gunfire, but firefighter Corey Comperatore was killed while protecting his family and two others were injured in the chaos.
Two months later, suspect Ryan Routh was arrested for staking out Trump’s golf course in another assassination attempt.
And just last week, Justin Blaxton, 34, was arrested after making calls to police about intentions to go to the White House to “kill Trump with missiles” and bring about the president’s “last day on Earth”.
In one call, the Florida man allegedly told cops: “I’m about to launch the missiles to destroy New York.
“I’m a Confederate soldier and I’m looking to get revenge. My missiles are attracted to Donald Trump’s tower.”
“I need a ride to the airport to be taken to the White House to assassinate the President,” he said in another bizarre communication.
During Trump’s first term in 2020, a man was shot by Secret Service agents after firing shots towards the White House while the president was inside the West Wing giving a press briefing.
