There was an 18 per cent drop in hate crimes towards Jewish people – but the data does not include incidents recorded by the Metropolitan Police, which would usually record a large number of hate crimes.
The number of hate crimes in the UK had been steadily falling for the last four years but are now on the rise again.
There were 137,550 hate crimes recorded by the police in England and Wales including the Met, but a change in how the London force records them means they are not directly comparable.
Overall, excluding the Met, there were 115,990 hate crime offences recorded by police across the two nations in the year ending March 2025.
This was up 2 per cent from 113,166 for the previous 12 months.
Race hate crimes rose by 6 per cent from 77,901 in the year to March 2024 to 82,490 in the year to this March.
Religiously motivated hate crimes were up 3 per cent from 6,973 to 7,164.
It comes after we revealed the Manchester synagogue terrorist claimed on a 999 call that he had “killed jews in the name of the Islamic State.”
Jihad al-Shamie, 35, told a police operator he was responsible for the attack on the Heaton Park Synagogue last Thursday morning.
His claim of responsibility and clearly defined motive expressed to the operator prompted counter-terror police to swiftly declare the attack on the synagogue as a terrorist incident.
Security chiefs believe Al-Shamie was a “lone wolf” who carried out the atrocity on his own after being inspired by Islamic terrorism.
The terrorist was shot dead by armed police as he had tried to break into the temple armed with a knife.
Two Jewish heroes Melvin Cravitz, 66, and Adrian Daulby, 53, died in the attack as they tried to stop Al-Shamie.
Security guard Mr Daulby suffered fatal gunshot wounds fired by police at al-Shamie as he stood behind the front door of the synagogue with others.
Mr Cravitz was among a group of people who tried to prevent Al-Shamie from storming the synagogue.
