Holiday chaos after fire erupts at Majorca hotel leaving tourists trapped in lift as 20 treated for smoke inhalation

NEARLY 20 people including kids needed treatment for smoke inhalation and tourists were trapped in a lift following a fire at a Majorca hotel.

The blaze broke out in the lift operation room this morning at the all-inclusive Bellevue Bonita and Club Resort in Puerto de Alcudia, causing chaotic scenes.

Several tourists were reportedly trapped in lifts at the hotel, but they are now understood to have been freed.

Three people, including at least one child, were rushed to hospital after the fire.

The alarm was sounded just after 9am today at the four-star complex in the north-east of Majorca.

Local firefighters said in their initial response to the emergency: “A fire has broken out in the lift machine room.

“There are people trapped in the elevators and the establishment is being evacuated.

“Firefighters from Inca, Alcudia and Arta have been mobilised.”

Two girls aged eight and 13 were among the 18 treated for smoke inhalation, the island’s Muro General Hospital.

Most of the patients are thought to be holidaymakers – although at least two hotel workers were also helped by emergency crews.

Firefighters evacuated the hotel, but it’s understood that some guests were instructed to remain in their rooms but stay out on their balconies.

Local police and Civil Guard officers were also dispatched to the scene.

Fire crews later said: Three people have been taken to hospital, one to Inca Hospital and two to Muro General Hospital.”

No information has been made public about their nationalities.

The hotel is described by Jet2holidays as a “lively and large complex perfect for a family holiday.”

The Bellevue Club has not yet made any official comment.

It describes itself online as an impressive all-inclusive resort known as the largest three-star holiday city in Europe.

It adds: “Surrounded by spectacular white sand beaches and crystal-clear waters, the hotel offers a unique setting with a lake that connects directly to the sea.

“Family fun is guaranteed with activities for all ages and tastes.

“The Hotel Bellevue Club is ideal for those looking for a unique stay, full of entertainment and relaxation in Mallorca.”

It is understood that no one was seriously hurt in the incident.
