The revellers were joined by happy fans returning from Wigan Athletic’s 0-1 away win against Rotherham.

Pubs, bars and nightclubs along the street were full to bursting with youngsters brushing off their Christmas hangovers.

Wigan’s Boxing Day fancy dress night has grown in popularity over the years.

A whopping 20,000 revellers have been known to join the annual celebrations.

No-one seems to know exactly why the local tradition first started back in 1980.

It comes after thousands of Brits chose Wetherspoons pints over Christmas meals – with pubs packed full of festive revellers.

Meanwhile, drinkers have been warned not to make a potentially costly mistake if they have any leftover Baileys after Christmas.
