A passenger in Mycroft’s Seat Ibiza car, 20-year-old Sarah Oliver, tragically died in the crash. Two others were seriously injured.
Mycroft pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and to seriously injuring two other people.
She was sentenced in Sheffield Crown Court today to nine years’ jail and 16 years’ disqualification from driving.
The court heard that Mycroft was speeding through a 40mph zone – and had driven through a red light on Wheatley Hall Rd – when she crashed into another car on August 2, 2022.
Video obtained by South Yorkshire Police showed the defendant in the moments before the deadly crash using her mobile phone and laughing as music blared.
Mycroft’s car was seen in CCTV footage driving above the 40mph speed limit through a red light before striking the side of a turning car and killing Ms Oliver.
Members of Ms Oliver’s devastated family spoke after the case today about how they missed their beloved daughter, granddaughter, sister, and friend every day.
They said: “She was a beautiful young woman who had her whole life ahead of her.
“Sarah had the ability to light up a room. She loved spending time with her family and was looking forward to travelling and becoming a godmother to her best friend’s baby this summer.
“She died six days before her 21st birthday and while we should have been planning celebrations, we were instead planning a funeral; her life and our lives were taken away from us by selfish actions.”
Sergeant John Taylor of South Yorkshire Police’s Serious Collisions Investigations Unit said the case was a “tragic” one.
He added: “The actions of Mycroft showed no regards for the safety of others and resulted in the death of Sarah and two other motorists sustaining serious injuries’
“We know Mycroft was using her mobile phone whilst driving and that she was speeding at the time of the collision.
“I urge people to consider the consequences of these actions.”
