Horror as 31 schoolchildren injured in double decker bus crash with tractor

MORE than 30 schoolchildren have been injured in a horror crash after a double-decker bus collided with a tractor.

The smash sparked chaos on Wednesday, as an air ambulance raced to the A1035 Leas Lane near to Seaton, East Yorkshire, at 3.30pm.

A girl and boy, both aged 15, were transported to hospital with serious injuries.

Humberside Police confirmed a further 29 children, aged between 11 and 16, suffered minor injuries.

Horrified parent Donna Cooper told how her daughter, 15, was on the bus and had her front teeth knocked out.

Ms Cooper told the BBC: “All I got was part of a video call and all I could see was blood everywhere.

“When I got there, it was just carnage.

“When I eventually found her, she was stood with a bandage to her mouth and when she took it away there was blood everywhere.”

The mum said her daughter had “suffered quite bad facial trauma”.

Fellow traumatised parents shared their eye-witness accounts on social media.

One wrote in Hull Live’s Traffic and Travel Facebook group: “I was there myself within 10 minutes of happening for my step daughter along with her mum.

“It was an horrific sight to see for all involved, unfortunately it’s more than just minor injuries for some.”

Another added: “My children where on the bus behind, I’ve been and picked them up, I think from the sound of things everyone escaped with only minor injury’s.

“Just a lot of very shaken up children”.

Meanwhile, a person claiming to be the bus driver’s parent wrote: “My son was the driver and he’s in a state of shock and has minor injuries.”

Someone else hailed the bus driver and said: “Even going through what he went through and his injuries he made sure every child on that bus was ok before himself.

“We have emailed the bus company to thank him. Please send him our thanks and speedy recovery”.

A spokesperson for Humberside Police said: “Officers were called to reports of a road traffic collision between a double decker school bus and a tractor on the A1035, Leas Lane near to Seaton at around 3.30pm yesterday afternoon (Wednesday 22 January).

“Emergency services attended, and a 15-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy have been taken to hospital to receive medical treatment to serious injuries.

“Twenty-nine passengers between the ages of 11 and 16 years old suffered minor injuries.

“Road closures were put in place at the scene to allow emergency services to work safely, the road has since been re-opened.  

“Investigations are ongoing, and officers are carrying out a number of lines of enquiries to establish the circumstances of the collision.

“If anyone was in the area around the time of the incident, or if you have any information, CCTV, doorbell or dashcam footage that may assist us with our enquiries, please contact us on our non-emergency number 101 quoting log 287 of 22 January.”
