A man has been charged after trying to murder three children in a horrific car crash
Emergency services raced to the A146 around 8.30pm on September 26 to reports of a three-car collision between Hales and Loddon, Norfolk.
The police had received a call less than an hour before the crash at 7.40pm which raised concerns for the safety of a man and three children.
Attempts were made to contact him and locate the vehicle they were travelling in.
At 8.36pm, the vehicle was involved in the collision.
Bankhardt was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder, Norfolk Constabulary said.
Three children were in the blue Vauxhall Astra he was driving.
One child was airlifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge from the scene, where they remain.
Another child also remains at Addenbrooke’s while the third has since been discharged from Norfolk and Norwich hospital.
The male drivers of the two other cars were also taken to Norfolk and Norwich Hospital with one being treated for serious injuries and the other discharged.
Bankhardt was also taken to the same hospital before he was transferred to the police investigation centre.
Police closed the road while emergency services dealt with the incident.
Bankhardt has subsequently been charged with three counts of attempted murder, one count of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, one count of assault, and one count of engaging in controlling/coercive behaviour.
He will appear at Norwich Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
Because of the prior police contact, Norfolk Constabulary has referred itself to the IOPC (Independent Office for Police Conduct) as is standard procedure.
Anyone who witnessed the collision or has any information that could help the investigation has been urged to come forward.
