A source said: “If Neil was alive, he would be facing a murder charge.

“Alison suffered an assault that could not have been self-inflicted. He is suspected of carrying out the attack.

“But the only person to answer exactly why Alison was murdered is dead — and that is Neil.”

The pair’s bodies were discovered at their terraced house in Greenock last Friday after concerns were raised for their welfare at around 5pm.

Police immediately locked down the home as a crime scene.

Alison had celebrated her birthday on January 1, and the couple became grandparents last month.

They had been congratulated after sharing a picture of their daughter’s baby online.

Detective Inspector Gordon Smith said: ‘The deaths are currently being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing.

“At this time, we have no information to suggest anyone else is involved in the deaths, and there is no risk to the wider public.

“A police presence will remain in the area while our investigation continues. A report will be sent to the fiscal.”
