George developed acute myeloid leukaemia as a baby, which is a rare form of blood cancer.

He was given just a 10 to 20 per cent chance of survival but he managed to beat the disease and make a full recovery.

Watching his son struggle with cancer inspired Gary to star in a nationwide campaign to encourage people to donate blood.

Blood transfusions had been a big part of George’s recovery.

Today, George is the co-founder of Your Business Number which provides phone numbers to entrepreneurs.

The company was launched in 2023 with Gary as one of his son’s backers.

Like his brothers, George’s mum is Michelle Cockayne whom Gary married in 1986.

The couple divorced in 2006.

Harry Lineker

Harry is Gary’s second son and he works at Goalhanger Firms Ltd, which is Gary’s own company.

The firm specialises in sporting documentaries.

In 2022, Harry was injured during a riot during a match between Sierra Leone and Liberia while he was filming.

Although the couple split in 2016, he has remained in contact with Ella whom he refers to as his “wonderful stepdaughter”.

He shared an adorable post about being able to visit her in Boston, after COVID-19 prevented them from seeing each other for a long time.

Walking away from Match of the Day

On November 11, 2024, it was announced that Gary would be leaving Match of the Day at the end of the current season.

It has also been confirmed that he will be leaving the BBC at the end of 2026.

The star has fronted the football show since 1999 and quickly became one of the highest paid presenters at the BBC.

A BBC source said: “Gary absolutely adores Match of the Day, and has been incredibly happy at the BBC

“But he has been at the helm since 1999, and by the time he leaves, he will have been at the Beeb for 30 years.”

The source added: “Gary will be 65 when he leaves; frankly, he isn’t getting younger. and just feels the time is right to focus solely on his mogul interests outside the BBC – namely his Goalhanger podcasting business which is becoming huge Stateside.”
