A GROUP of spa-goers have been exposed to “excess chlorine” and left reportedly feeling sick – sparking an emergency response.
Some 27 people were affected at Cliffords Health Club & Spa in Long Eaton, Derbyshire, with 10 showing symptoms after having been in the swimming pool.
Fire crews raced to the scene around 10.27am today where four club members were taken to hospital.
David Diggins, fire service group manager, said they were called to reports of people who had been “overcome by the chemical” and were feeling nauseous.
He told the BBC there had been “a mixture of some chemicals within the systems” of the pool, which had been overfilled.
“There is no wider risk of chemicals in the area and the incident has now been fully resolved,” he added.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) was informed and it is believed the club has now reopened.
In a statement posted on Facebook, the venue said: “Following an incident this morning during normal pool maintenance, the relevant authorities have now given us the OK to safely open the pool and spa.”
A spokesperson for Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Emergency services were called to an incident involving a swimming pool at a commercial property on Regent Street, Long Eaton, at 10.27am today.
