Noel Tyrrel, 64, says he is often met with shouts of “All right, Chubbs” and fans ask him for autographs and selfies.

Others think they are being pranked for TV and he was once mistaken for the blue comedian, left, by ex-footballer Paul Gascoigne when he got in his cab.

But Noel said: “I’d rather look like Hugh Grant or Nigel Havers.

“It’s a shame I’m the doppelganger of a crude comic who tells very blue and risqué jokes.

“I’m always sorry to disappoint passengers by admitting I’m not who they think I am.”

Noel, of Poole, Dorset, has spent years being mistaken for the comedian, now 78.

He said: “I once picked up Gazza when he was living in Sandbanks. As he fell into the taxi, he said, ‘For f***’s sake I’m being driven by Roy Chubby f*****g Brown. Tell me I’m dreaming’.

“Passengers think they are taking part in a Noel Edmonds-style stunt.”

Noel, whose late dad, John, was ITV’s betting and results voice man, said: “I was once mistaken for him by a man at Catterick racecourse whose wife had an affair with one of Chubby’s roadies.

“At Redcar, a man approached me with an outstretched hand in the gents before I’d even had time to wash my hands.

“He said, ‘Put it here Chubby’, and I hope he meant my hand.”

Noel, who now works as a taxi company operator, says he is considering making extra cash as a tribute act.

He said: “I like telling jokes. I’ve memorised some of Chubby’s material, though I’d leave out the offensive stuff.”
