Dawn returned home to Dewsbury while Bright flew back to Nigeria to sort out a spouse visa to live with her in Britain, which finally came through a year later.
It was when he finally touched down at Heathrow Airport that Dawn began to have serious concerns about their unconventional romance.
She said: “When I met him at the airport, he said ‘Hi’ and put his arm around me, and that was it. When we got home, he said he was tired and wanted to go to bed.
“I thought it was strange behaviour. Back in Nigeria, he had been video calling me and telling me how much he loved me every day.
“I tried to make it work. My brother Rory, who is 71, helped him get a manufacturing job at a local company, and I would talk to him about how relationships work in the UK.
“But Bright told me that in Nigeria, the wife does everything the husband tells her to do and that she has to pay for everything.
“He kept asking for money, claiming he was still in debt from the wedding. I was not putting up with that. I told him so, and we started arguing constantly.
“Also, the sex was not good once he got to the UK. It was all about him and what he wanted; there was no foreplay. It was not long before I realised I had made a big mistake.”
The couple separated in October 2023, only to get back together six months later when Dawn was given a £63,000 payout following a botched prolapse operation she underwent at an NHS hospital.

She said: “We started renting a place together on a six-month contract and he was paying half the rent and bills and the council tax, but he was also sending a lot of money back home to Nigeria.
“I got all new furniture, and he didn’t put a penny towards it and when we went out for dinner, it was usually me picking up the bill.
“At Christmas, to cheer myself up, I booked for my brother and me to go on a cruise around the Caribbean.
“My husband went crazy, saying I should have given the money to him so he could pay off his debts. When I got back from the cruise, he found messages on my phone that he didn’t like.
“I had been messaging some of the men I met on the dating apps, but only because I saw them as friends.
“I tried to explain that to him, but he didn’t understand, and we broke up two weeks ago. He’s still messaging me, but I’m determined not to go back.
“I realise that I was a fool to fall for him. I feel that he’s used me to start a new life in the UK, and he was probably never in love with me in the first place.
“My advice to anyone thinking of going on a dating site is, be very careful.”
