He works two nights a week at his local with his pay going towards heating and lighting at the church.

After a shift, the 56-year-old loves a pint of ABK Hell and a chat with regulars in Claverley, Shrops.

He said: “Hell is a fantastic drink, once voted the world’s best lager.

“I should be on commission for the amount I sell.

“People think it’s highly amusing.

“Hell means blonde, light beer in German.”

Mr Ward previously worked as a midwife and was serial killer Fred West’s health care officer in prison.

He volunteered to help at the pub a few years ago when they needed staff for New Year’s Eve.

He added: “I’d done bar work before I was ordained.

“I practised with the pumps and they gave me the job.

“Working in the pub helps make the church and village whole.

“People see vicars are just normal.

“We drink, some smoke, we enjoy the football.

“We’re no different other than we think we’re called by God.”

Landlord Ken Lavender said: “Garry’s brilliant.

“Locals love it when he joins them for a Hell and a chat.”
