An increasing number are setting up businesses and juggling work around their children.

Women in the UK launched more than 150,000 new companies in 2022, twice as many as in 2018.

Here, female entrepreneur Cheryl Maclean tells MEL HUNTER how her kids even boosted her success . . .

CHERYL MACLEAN’S kids grew up in her Falkirk factory and it’s given them a work ethic she’s incredibly proud of

The mum of two set up Candle Shack in 2010 with just husband Duncan. Now they employ 80 people and turn over £15million a year.

Cheryl, based in Rumbling Bridge, near Dollar, said: “It was difficult when the girls were young, we’d pick them up from school but return to work when they went to bed.”

She turned her back on a successful career in beauty to go ‘all in’ on the candle making business that began in her kitchen, while Duncan left a job in the Army.

Cheryl said: “I loved my beauty salon, but we loved what we were doing with the business too.

“We needed to decide whether to go all in — and we did.”

And she’s so glad they did — for the whole family’s sake. Cheryl said:

“Our girls have grown up in the factories.

“Ellie, our youngest, is in the last few months of school and has offers to go to uni to do business.

Our eldest, Lauren, is now 22 and is in marketing.

“They’re both go-getters, which comes from us and our 14 years in business.”

CHERYL’S TIP: If you have fire in your belly, listen to your heart and go for it. Remember not only to nurture your business but also your well being.
