MARCO PENGE experienced one of the most surreal moments of golf in recent memory when his ball landed on a spectator’s belly.

The English golf star was trying to chip out of a bunker at the British Masters when the bizarre situation occurred.

His chip flew over the green and into the crowd of spectators watching from a nearby mound.

There was a moment of confusion as the audience glanced around to try and find the rogue ball, before realising it had settled on one fan’s stomach.

Fans and the commentary team saw the funny side of the unusual incident, with the announcers immediately joking that he should play it where it lie.

Some on social media likened it to a moment in comedy classic Happy Gilmore.

One X user commented: “Play it as it lies. Shooter had to play it off Frankenstein’s fat foot, remember?”

The cult favourite film has experienced a renaissance in recent months following the release of its Netflix sequel.

Several golf stars made cameos in the film, including world number one Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy.

Penge is in the midst of a late charge to join McIlroy in qualifying for the Ryder Cup.

The 27-year-old currently sits in 14th in the qualification rankings, which will be decided by today’s final day of action at the Masters.

Only the top six will qualify for the competition, but Penge has already shot up six places in the rankings, and will be dreaming of a further push.

Five players have already mathematically qualified for team Europe – McIlroy, Robert MacIntyre, Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose and Tyrrell Hatton.

Europe’s team captain Luke Donald will then also pick six more members to join the team, suggesting that a strong enough showing could put other competitors in the picture without automatic qualification.
