US president Donald Trump surprisingly has a very strong connection to Scotland.

His mother, Mary Anne MacLeod, was born and raised on the Isle of Lewis, a Scottish island just 24 miles from the mainland.

She was born on May 10, 1912 as the youngest of ten children to her fisherman father Malcolm MacLeod and his wife Mary Smith.

At the age of 18, she left the Scottish island for New York to seek work as a domestic servant.

It was in America she met successful property developer Frederick Trump, to whom she married six years after first moving to the country.

Frederick himself was also a migrant, his father of the same name first immigrated to the US from Germany in 1885 and then again in 1905.

Donald Trump still has three cousins on Lewis, two of which, still live in the rebuilt ancestral home.

He visited the house which his mother grew up in 2008, reportedly spending 97 seconds in the ancestral home before leaving.

When is Donald Trump visiting the UK?

Donald and his wife Melania Trump arrived in the UK on the evening of Tuesday, September 16 and will stay until Thursday, September 18.

Donald and Melania Trump will travel to Windsor Castle to be greeted by the Prince and Princess of Wales before getting a formal welcoming by King Charles III himself.

This comes just under six years after the president’s first state visit in December 2019, when he was hosted by the late Queen Elizabeth II.

The trip arrives two months after the 79-year-old spent four days in his mothers country of birth, Scotland, where he met politicians and visited his golf courses.
