JOCKEY Jim Crowley is ‘not in a good way’ as he undergoes surgery and Trevor Whelan has shattered his leg in three places and will also need an operation after their ‘absolutely awful’ York falls.
Both riders fell in yesterday’s big race of the day at the northern track.

PAJockey Trevor Whelan has confirmed he has broken his leg in three places after the awful York fall[/caption]
Crowley was in the famous blue and white silks in the middle of the pack on Almeraq when he fell, bringing down Whelan on Tiger Bay in the process
Crowley, who was on the William Haggas-trained favourite Almeraq, appeared to clip heels.
That sparked a chain reaction that saw Whelan fall from Tiger Bay in the Listed six furlong sprint.
There was a big delay to racing as both riders were initially treated on the track before being rushed to Leeds General Infirmary.
Incredibly, both horses were up and OK after the horrendous flashpoint, which viewers described as being ‘absolutely awful’.
Whelan confirmed on X the extent of his injuries – while Crowley is having an operation this morning.
Crowley has broken his leg and is believed to have also broken his pelvis.
Whelan posted: “Thanks for all the get well messages much appreciated.
“I’ve broken my leg in three places and due for an operation on it as well.”
While Angus Gold, Shadwell’s racing manager, said: “Jim is not in a very good way.
“He’s having an operation as we speak, we think he’s broken his leg and pelvis, but we haven’t heard more than that.
“It was a scary moment. It’s too early to suggest who might ride what, we haven’t sat down to discuss anything yet.”
Stewards wanted to hold an enquiry into the riding of Callum Rodriguez after the race.
He finished second on Crestofdistinction but stewards want to take a closer look into whether his actions sparked the fall.
Rodriguez also hit another horse, Prince Of India, over the nose with his whip – but this was deemed to be accidental.
The BHA stewards’ report read: “The Stewards wished to hold an enquiry into interference inside two furlongs out involving CRESTOFDISTINCTION, placed second, ridden by Callum Rodriguez; ALMERAQ, which fell, ridden by Jim Crowley and TIGER BAY, which was brought down, ridden by Trevor Whelan but were unable to do so as jockeys were receiving medical attention.
“They adjourned their enquiry to a date to be confirmed.”
The delay to York races was the second of the day.
Jockey David Noonan was rushed to hospital at Fontwell after reportedly being kicked by a horse.
