Berlin police told German newspaper Tagespiegel that the man was injured with a sharp object and transported by the fire brigade to hospital.

Tagespiegel said the attack had taken place on the northern side of the sprawling Holocaust monument, near the US Embassy.

Police and rescuers are at the scene with various emergency vehicles.

Several people are said to have been treated for shock, Bild reports.

Officers are also searching the area.

Police spokesman Florian Nath said: “The victim is a male, injuries from a stabbing weapon.

“He is in hospital. There is no information yet about the man’s identity.

“The murder weapon has not yet been found. The perpetrator is on the run.

“Witnesses claim to have seen a man running away.”

There is currently no apparent connection to the embassy or the Berlin memorial and a major operation is underway, according to Bild.

Berlin cops said in a statement on X: “At around 6 pm, a man was seriously injured by an unknown person in the Field of Stelae at the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in #Mitte.

“The injured man was taken to hospital. Rescue workers are on site caring for several people who had to witness the events.

“Investigations are ongoing at the crime scene.”

Cops have launched a major manhunt for the suspect who is believed to still be armed.

The incident comes just hours after a Russian teenager was arrested on suspicion of planning an attack on the Israeli embassy in the German capital.

An 18-year-old has been attempting to flee Germany at the Brandenburg Airport when he was detained, Bild reported.

According to the outlet, the arrest came after cops received a tip-off from a foreign intelligence agency.
