LIAM LAWSON will start the Canadian Grand Prix from the pit lane after being hit with a 50-place penalty.

The Racing Bulls driver has been sanctioned after changing his engine under parc ferm conditions.

Fans found the outlandish sanction hilarious, though some feel it is a little harsh.

One reacted saying: “Starting from Greenland.”

Another added: “50? Should start from outside the track.”

A third wrote: “What a ridiculous penalty to even have when there’s only 20 cars on the grid, but I assume stuff like this is to ensure they’re behind even other penalised teams. Just seems silly though.”

And another commented: “Thought this was a parody lmao.”

Pierre Gasly will also start from the pit lane after making changes to his car following his 20th-place finish in qualifying.

Cars are locked in parc fermé conditions after the start of qualifying and only very minor adjustments are allowed to be made ahead of the grand prix.

Serious modifications result in penalties, though Alpine’s changes to Gasly’s car have been deemed less significant than Racing Bulls.

Lawson has suffered a difficult maiden campaign and is still yet to pick up his first championship points.

The New Zealander was axed by Red Bull after just two races this season and replaced by Yuki Tsunoda.
