All emergency services, including the air ambulance, are at the scene.
National Highways: South-West confirmed on X that “Traffic Officers are assisting with strategic closures on the approach.”
Avon and Somerset Police are leading the response, supported by ambulance and fire crews.
The crash has prompted a full closure of the motorway both northbound and southbound, with no clear estimate yet on when it will reopen.
A spokesperson said: “Due to the nature of the incident, the road will remain closed for a while.”
National Highways warned drivers: “If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time.
“Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.”
Diversions have been put in place.
Northbound traffic should leave at Junction 14 and follow the B4509 to the A38 northbound, passing through Cambridge and Claypits, to rejoin the M5 at Junction 13.
Southbound drivers are being sent along the A38 from Junction 13 to rejoin at Junction 14.
The crash, described as “serious”, has caused gridlock on surrounding routes, and drivers are being urged to follow the diversion signs and avoid the area if possible.
