A VITAL motorway has closed in both directions for over four hours after a “serious crash” sent emergency crews rushing to the scene.
It is uncertain when junctions 23 (Dunball) and 24 (Bridgewater) on the M5 in Somerset will reopen.
Drivers have been warned to expect delays.
National Highways said: “The M5 in Somerset is closed in both directions between J23 (Dunball) and J24 (Bridgwater) due to a serious collision.
“Emergency services including Avon and Somerset Police are in attendance.
“National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene providing assistance with traffic management.
“Due to the nature of this incident, the road is expected to be closed for some time.”
Northbound traffic has been advised by National Highways to follow the solid triangle diversion symbol on the road signs.
While Southbound traffic is advised to follow the solid square diversion symbol on road signs.
