Prosecutors are seeking tight monitoring and Brueckner wants police protection after he finishes his 2019 sentence on Wednesday — for rape in 2005.

JVA Sehnde prison in Germany, where he is being held, has an athletics track that doubles as a helipad.

A prison source said: “Everyone is in meetings right now, scratching their heads over the best way to do this.

Brueckner is a convicted, violent criminal so he doesn’t deserve special treatment — but there are fears someone could target him after he was named as the McCann suspect so they need to make sure nothing happens to him.

“Most are released out the front door but they can bring cars inside and even take prisoners out by helicopter, in exceptional circumstances.”

Brueckner has not been charged with any crimes in connection to Madeleine’s 2007 disappearance in Praia da Luz aged three, but our investigation this year places him at a key search location in Portugal.

We also revealed the existence of a hard drive and laptop containing images, closely linked to cops’ belief that Madeleine is dead.

Lawyers claimed Brueckner would not be electronically tagged on release — which prosecutors had requested.

A jail pal this week said he was sad to leave because JVA Sehnde was so modern.

He added: “Everyone gets their own TV.

“Staff are so nice and coffee is fantastic.”
