The A56 has been closed in both directions following the major collision
Pictures of the crash show the truck on its side, blocking both lanes on the road in Rossendale, Lancashire.
Emergency services have been scrambled to the dual carriageway following the incident.
National Highways North West confirmed a closure was in place between Edenfield and New Hall Hey.
In a post on X, it said: “The A56 is CLOSED in both directions between the M66 (Edenfield) and the A682 (NewHallHey) due to a collision where a lorry has struck the central reservation barrier.
“If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time.”
Witnesses to the crash told MEN that a diesel spillage had started to appear on the road.
Lancashire Police said the road could be closed for “some time” and urged drivers to look for alternative routes.
In a statement, the force said: “We want to update you and let you know that A56 in Rossendale is currently closed in both directions between Edenfield and Haslingden due to a road traffic collision.
“We anticipate that the road will be closed for some time, whilst we make sure the road is safe.
“In the meantime, we’d recommend looking for an alternative route and driving carefully, leaving plenty of extra time to get to your destination.”
