The fire and rescue service for London said they were tackling the flames in a mixed use building on Tottenham Street in Fitzrovia.

Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were at the inferno.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) urged people to avoid the area and keep windows and doors closed.

Footage taken from the 8th floor of the BBC Broadcasting House appeared to show the plume around Tottenham Court Road.

One person wrote on social media: “It absolutely stinks here in Oxford Circus.

“The air is hazy with smoke.”

Another said: “I’m going to the Mick Jones exhibition round there later!”

A LFB spokesperson said: “Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters are tackling a fire at a mixed use building on Tottenham Street in Euston.

“Half of the ground floor is alight.

“One of the Brigade’s 32-metre turntable ladders is being used at the scene to help fight the fire from above.

“Control Officers took the first of 14 calls at 0743 and mobilised crews from Soho, Euston, Islington and surrounding fire stations to the scene.

“The cause of the fire is not yet known.”
