Major motorway brought to a standstill after multi-vehicle crash with 2 MILES of delays for thousands of drivers

A HORROR collision on a major motorway has brought traffic to a standstill.

National Highways has warned that the M5 has been shut with motorists told they should expect to face down hour long delays.

Traffic has been backed up for two miles following the multi-vehicle collision in Gloucestershire.

Motorists are currently being held between junction 14, Thornbury, and junction 15, Almondsbury, while the collision is dealt with.

Drivers have been facing delays since around 7:30am this morning.

National Highways said in a statement on social media: “Traffic is currently stopped on the M5 southbound between J14 Thornbury and J15 Almondsbury due to a multi vehicle collision.

National Highways Traffic Officers are on scene.

“There is currently approx. 2 miles of congestion on approach.”

A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) said: “We were called at 07:28hrs on Monday 21 July to a road traffic collision near Thornbury.

“We sent one double-crewed land ambulance, and two operations officers to the scene.”
