The northbound route was shut between Junctions 33 and 34 this morning.

Lancashire Police have confirmed that the road will be “closed for some time”, as emergency services respond to the crash.

A spokesperson for the force released a statement on Facebook regarding the incident.

The statement read: “We want to update you and let you know that M6 northbound is currently closed between junctions 33 and 34 due to a road traffic collision.

“We anticipate that the road will be closed for some time, whilst we make sure the road is safe.

“In the meantime, we’d recommend looking for an alternative route and driving carefully, leaving plenty of extra time to get to your destination.”

Huge queues have been spotted forming, after the road ground to a halt.

Although one lane has been opened, drivers have been warned to expect delays throughout the day.

The Sun has approached Lancashire Police for comment.

The news comes after a day of chaos on the London Underground.

Industrial strikes forced the majority of the network’s Tube lines to close, as National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) failed to reach an agreement with Transport for London (TFL).

Tube services stopped at around 6pm yesterday, with little to no service on the network since.

Services will not start up again until 8am on Friday or until TfL and the RMT reach an agreement.

The Tube strikes could cost the economy around £230mn, according to the Centre for Economics and Business Research.

Meanwhile, TfL’s website went down – potentially due to an influx of commuters trying to use the site to plan their journeys amidst the travel chaos.
