A 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter the following month.

The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed no criminal charges will be brought.

Michael Quinn, deputy chief crown prosecutor, said: “This was a shocking and deeply upsetting incident.

“The CPS and South Yorkshire Police have worked closely together to determine whether any criminal charges should be brought against the other ice hockey player involved.

“Following a thorough police investigation and a comprehensive review of all the evidence by the CPS, we have concluded that there is not a realistic prospect of conviction for any criminal offence and so there will not be a prosecution.

“Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Adam Johnson.”

Video clips showed Petgrave’s leg being sent into the air after he was knocked off-balance moments before the horror.

Around 8,000 fans watched in horror as Johnson lay stricken on the ice at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena.

He received emergency treatment while being shielded by players before he was taken to hospital.

An inquest into his death heard previously how Adam’s fiancée Ryan Wolfe identified his body after he died in hospital later that day.

The full inquest was adjourned until January 26, 2024, while the investigation into his death continues.

Tragically, Johnson is understood to have become engaged to partner Ryan during the summer before his death.

She took to Instagram on Monday morning to share a picture of the ice hockey player.

Ryan said: “My sweet, sweet angel. I’ll miss you forever and love you always.”
