A 52-YEAR-OLD man has died after being “restrained” following a violent incident inside a Co-op store.
The man is alleged to have assaulted members of staff in the shop, in Torpoint, Cornwall, on Wednesday August 6.
Police arrived at around 4.45pm when he reportedly began hurling abuse at shoppers at the store on Fore Street.
The man was restrained by a customer, but became unresponsive shortly afterwards, said police.
The 52-year-old was rushed to hospital in critical condition but cops have since confirmed the man died in hospital on Saturday, August 9.
Devon and Cornwall Police also arrested a man in his 40s on suspicion of assault.
He has been bailed until November 1 while further enquiries are carried out into the incident.
Devon and Cornwall Police are appealing for more information from anyone who saw what happened.
A spokesperson for the force said: “A 52-year-old man has died in hospital following an incident in Torpoint on Wednesday 6 August. Police were called at 4.45pm following reports of a disturbance at Co-op Food in Fore Street.
“During the incident the man was restrained by another customer but became unresponsive a short time later.
“The man, from Torpoint, was treated by paramedics and taken to Derriford Hospital.
“Sadly, he died in hospital on Saturday 9 August.
“A man in his 40s from the Millbrook area, was arrested on suspicion of assault and bailed until 1 November pending further enquiries.
“Police are continuing their enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
