A MAN has been charged with murder after a woman was stabbed to death at a holiday park in Somerset.

Denise Steeves, 59, was found with “a significant injury” at Diamond Meadow Lodge Park in Brean at around 4.50pm on Wednesday.

Emergency services raced to the scene, but she was pronounced dead 30 minutes later.

Simon Steeves, 70, has been charged with murder.

Detective Inspector Neil Meade, of Avon and Somerset Police’s Major Crime Investigation Team, said: “Formal identification has yet to take place, however we believe the deceased to be Denise Steeves.

“Her family has been fully updated on this development and our continued thoughts are with them as they come to terms with what has happened.”

Neighbours described the two as a “couple” often seen walking their dog around the site.

One told The Sun: “They were just an ordinary couple who have lived here for several years.

“They seemed really nice are used to see them walking the dog who they rescued from a local kennels.”

Another neighbour said: “It’s shocking this has happened here in our quiet park in the countryside.

“They were always together and seemed like a lovely couple.

“We didn’t know anything had happened until we noticed the police helicopters flying over us, and then police cars and ambulances turn up.”

The caravan park, which boasts more than 40 caravans was quiet on Thursday, with residents pruning roses and walking their dogs as usual.

One police car guarded a single caravan which was surrounded by “do not enter” tape.

Another local said: “I’ve lived here for over 35 years, I’ve never seen the police – other than driving past. It’s really unusual, there’s never been any trouble over there.

“I saw a helicopter landing there but I’m not sure if it was the police or ambulance one. It’s shocking.”

DI Meade added: “We will continue to carry out a full and thorough investigation as this case progresses.

“There will continue to be an increased police presence in the area and our officers are still available to answer any questions or concerns you may have.”
