A 70-year-old man has died four days after his car plunged off a pier and into the water at a popular British seaside resort.

Emergency services were called to Vincent’s Pier in South Bay, North Yorkshire at 7:18 pm on May 8 after reports of the tragic crash.

The white Mini Cooper the man was driving sped off the pier, overturned before becoming submerged in water, cops said.

A rescue operation involving the coastguard, lifeboat, fire and rescue, and ambulance services was quickly launched in a bid to rescue the victim.

He was rushed to hospital where he was put in critical care.

But despite paramedics’ best efforts, the man was pronounced dead just four days later in the presence of his family.

Cops have since launched an urgent appeal for information from the public.

The force have asked witnesses or anyone with relevant footage to come forward.

The man is not being named at this time.

North Yorkshire police said: “We are sad to report the death of a 70-year-old local man who was involved in a single-vehicle collision on Scarborough’s East Pier last Thursday (8 May 2025) at 7.18pm.

“He had been in a critical condition in hospital since being recovered from the sea in a rescue operation involving the coastguard, lifeboat, fire and rescue, ambulance and the police.

“The white Mini Cooper car he was driving left the pier, overturned, and became submerged in the water.

“He passed away on Monday (12 May 2025) evening in the presence of his family.

“He is not being named at this time.
