A man stabbed to death in a bloodbath at a hostel has been named – as anti-terror cops probe and an “asylum seeker” is arrested.

Terrence Carney, 70, was a “passer-by” and had been using a nearby ATM when he was killed near a hostel in Hartlepool, Co Durham, shortly after 5am on Sunday.

Terrence is understood to have just finished using the cash point when he crossed paths with the asylum seeker.

The man in custody is alleged to have earlier attacked a housemate, believed to be another migrant, with a knife.

The OAP died at the scene a short time later.

Counter-terror cops are investigating the double stabbing, which also left a second man with serious injuries.

The first victim, who was attacked shortly before Terence was killed, remains in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A 44-year-old was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. He remains in custody.

Police have been granted a further 12 hours to quiz him over the incident.

A statement from Counter-Terrorism Policing North East said: “The man who sadly lost his life during the incident has this afternoon (October 16) been named as Terrence Carney, 70, from Hartlepool.

“The thoughts and deepest sympathies of Cleveland Police and Counter-Terrorism Policing North East are with the family and friends of Terrence at this extremely difficult time.

“Early inquiries suggest that Terrence was a passer-by at the time of the incident, having recently used a nearby ATM.”

The double stabbing is not being treated as a terrorist incident.

But checks on the suspect are said to have flagged up “serious concerns” about his background and the Counter Terrorism Policing North East unit were immediately informed.

Up to 30 cops swarmed the area after the alert was raised, before a “large” knife was found on the ground close to where the victim fell.

A blue forensics tent was visible on the main thoroughfare through the town along with yellow evidence markers on Sunday.

Multiple locations were sealed off and cops stood guard as forensic officers in white suits carried out searches.
