The Sun understands the man was set to board a deportation flight before he escaped, fleeing past moving aircraft on Sunday evening.
In the stunning clip shared on social media, the man could be seen racing across the tarmac while wearing something wide around his waist.
It is understood he managed to break free from his security escorts before boarding the flight.
After being chased for over a minute across the busy airport grounds, the man eventually gives up.
After being arrested, the man was then returned to the flight and deported to the UK.
The Home Office is understood to be investigating the incident alongside its escort supplier – Mitie Care & Custody.
A spokesperson for Mitie told The Sun: “An investigation into the incident is underway.
“The individual was quickly apprehended, reboarded the flight, and was handed over to the relevant authorities on landing.”
In the footage, a van arriving next to the man, carrying two people in high-vis clothing, ended the dramatic chase.
The man can then be seen being escorted away, with a later cut in the clip showing him pinned to the ground.
A few moments after this, a police van can be seen racing across the airport from its eastern end, eventually arriving at the scene.
The man was then put in the back of the vehicle.
A Heathrow spokesperson said on Sunday: “Working with partners, we have quickly resolved an incident at the airport involving an individual who accessed the airfield taxiway.
“The individual has been removed from the airport.
“The airport continues to operate as normal and passengers are travelling as planned.”
