Well, here we go… Saturday lunchtime delivers one of the Premier League’s most entertaining and unpredictable fixtures as Manchester City host Tottenham at the Etihad.

Both sides come into this one full of confidence after emphatic opening-weekend wins. City hit the ground running with a 4-0 demolition of Wolves at Molineux, while Spurs eased past newly-promoted Burnley with a 3-0 victory of their own.

And if recent history is anything to go by, we’re in for fireworks. The last four Premier League meetings between these two at the Etihad have produced a staggering 21 goals – with Tottenham scoring at least twice in every game, including last season’s stunning 4-0 win in this very fixture.

But this City side looks different.

After finishing last season without a major trophy for the first time in eight years, Pep Guardiola’s men appear rejuvenated. They were energetic, dynamic, and clinical in their opener, with Erling Haaland and summer signing Tijjani Reijnders combining for four goal contributions.

In truth, the signs of a resurgence have been there for a while. Since the start of April, no Premier League side has collected more points than City. They also boast the most clean sheets (7) in that span and have faced the fewest shots per game of any team in the division.

However, regardless of form, Spurs always seem to give Pep Guardiola a headache.

Manchester City have won just four of their last 12 Premier League meetings with Tottenham. Spurs have also left the Etihad with three points in two of their last four visits.

In fact, Guardiola has lost nine games to Tottenham across his managerial career – more than against any club except Liverpool (10).

And speaking of managers, Thomas Frank knows how to win at the Etihad.

He guided Brentford to a 2-1 win at the Etihad in November 2022. Now at the helm in north London, he’s made a strong start to life with Spurs – opening his Premier League account with a commanding win last weekend, following an unfortunate penalty shootout defeat to European champions PSG in the Super Cup.

Goals

It should come as no surprise that we’re backing this clash to deliver plenty of goals, again.

As highlighted earlier, the last four Premier League meetings at the Etihad between Manchester City and Tottenham have produced a remarkable 21 goals, with both sides regularly finding the net.

Both teams also hit the ground running on the opening weekend, bagging seven goals between them and firing off 31 shots – 10 of those on target.

They currently sit 1st (Man City 2.47) and 2nd (Spurs 2.32) in the expected goals (xG) table after just one round, with forwards Erling Haaland and Richarlison already firing on all cylinders.

Profitable relationship

Could the link-up between Erling Haaland and Tijjani Reijnders become a profitable one? On early evidence – we wouldn’t bet against it.

Reijnders, 27, arrived from AC Milan after registering five assists in 37 Serie A appearances during a tough campaign for the Rossoneri. But he’s already hit the ground running in Manchester, needing just 61 minutes to tee up Haaland for City’s third against Wolves last weekend.

His impact was clear – no City player had more touches (30), received more passes (19), or completed more passes in the final third (16).

And that should be good news for talisman Haaland, who has scored 48 goals in 48 home Premier League appearances for Manchester City and has four goals in six appearances against Tottenham.
