A MAN who was part of the viral “bored club girl” meme has spoken out on what made her pull the now famous facial expression.

A nightclub photo of Lucia Gorman looking extremely bored while Patrick Ritchie spoke to her up close first went viral back in 2018.

The iconic image shows Lucia looking unimpressed as Patrick, now 24, chatted away in her ear when they were both 18-year-old students.

The long-time school pals were on a night out at the Milk Club at Bourbon in Edinburgh, when they ran into each other.

Patrick approached Lucia and tried to talk to her as loud music was playing – but her reaction turned it into a viral meme.

The snap ended up being shared millions of times and has been dubbed one of the “most relatable nightclub photos in history“.

Patrick, now a qualified commercial surveyor, was all set to start his degree at Aberdeen University when the hilarious snap was taken.

And he has now given the story from his side of the infamous photo.

Speaking to MailOnline, he said: “I didn’t know that the photo was being taken. I first became aware of it the day after it was out there.”

But Patrick confessed: “I don’t know what I was saying to Lucia at the time…

“We were out in the bar. We were in a big group and I must have spoken to her five, ten, fifteen times that night.

“I can’t really remember what I said so it must been good night. I had a laugh about and it is what it is.

“It’s not really come up in the future. It’s just a bit mad that it kind of blew up.”

Since then, Patrick has completed a Master’s in Real Estate at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh.

Patrick admitted he still runs into Lucia from time-to-time and they share a laugh about the moment.

Reflecting on the photo, he recalled that his family probably had a good laugh when they saw it, as it was one of his first nights out.

Lucia, now an assistant brand manager at Premier Foods, also recently revealed exactly what happened on that night seven years ago.

Like Patrick, she does not remember the specific conversation.

But Lucia recalled to JOE that she had probably had enough of getting her “ear chewed off” and was wanting to go home.

She described the picture as the ultimate mansplaining meme, and said: “I feel like a lot of women in the world probably really understand, and whilst he wasn’t being horrible, I think girls in clubs get the brunt of men just explaining things that you don’t need to hear”.

It is a face Lucia has had trouble recreating naturally for people, highlighting how it was not staged as some may think.

She told JOE: “I find it quite hard to do the like moody, grumpy, uninterested expressions, but maybe I should just get Patrick back in my ear again and we can try to recreate it”.

But seven years later, Lucia has partnered with Samsung to bring more famous facial expressions from memes to life.

Among those include the Harry Maguire ‘Put the Bins Out’ meme, highly-relatable ‘Confused Math Lady’, and tribute the original image that made Lucia viral.

The recreation of these famous faces have been done to highlight the new Samsung Galaxy A56 5G Best Face technology, which prevents group photo mishaps from happening through AI.

It is designed to eliminate awkward faces, people standing in front of each other and blinking eyes that occur in photographs.
