Man Utd and Man City have just HALF of all 40 players from FA Cup final upset remaining after major rebuilds

MANCHESTER UNITED and Manchester City are set to lock horns once again this Sunday for the 197th Manchester Derby.

And it has now been three transfer windows since the FA Cup final in 2024, which saw United beat City 2-1 to claim revenge on a City victory the year before.

But there has been plenty of change in both club squads since that Wembley showdown.

Winners United only have SEVEN players out of their entire matchday squad remaining at the club, with another huge rebuild project being undertaken by part-owners, Ineos.

The changes have been less dramatic for the Etihad side, who still won the Premier League in the 2023/24 campaign.

But a major drop-off in performance last year compared to previously lofty standards prompted City chiefs to splash the cash on some new arrivals in the winter and this summer.

Below, SunSport has taken a look at the changes to both sides, with only 21 of the 40 players in the teams for that Wembley showdown no longer playing their football in Manchester.

Starting off with the winners, United have seen 13 out of the 20 players in the squad, plus manager Erik ten Hag, depart since then.

Goalkeeper Andre Onana‘s United exit was confirmed on Thursday evening as he joined Trabzonspor after losing his place and falling out with current manager Ruben Amorim.

Both Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Raphael Varane left United the summer after lifting the Cup, with the right-back heading to West Ham and centre-back going to Como before retiring due to a knee injury.

Lisandro Martinez and Diogo Dalot both remain at the club, but Martinez is once again sidelined and Dalot has lost his starting position.

Sofyan Amrabat‘s loan from Fiorentina was not made permanent, while midfield partner – and goalscorer on the day – Kobbie Mainoo is still at United but pushed for a loan over fear of a lack of minutes.

Fellow United goalscorer Alejandro Garnacho departed for Chelsea this summer after throwing his toys out the pram for not being selected in the starting XI of United’s Europa League defeat to Tottenham.

He has joined Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay through the exit door, while Bruno Fernandes is still a core figure at United.

Only three players on the Red Devils bench, Altay Bayindir, Amad Diallo and Mason Mount, are still at the club.

Jonny Evans, Victor Lindelof and Christian Eriksen all left this summer, with Evans retiring from football to take up a coaching role at United, while Rasmus Hojlund, Willy Kambwala and Antony have all left as well.

Meanwhile, in the City camp, Pep Guardiola remains the head honcho, but oversaw a big dip in performance from his ageing squad last season before he sanctioned the departure of a number of core players.

Kyle Walker and Kevin De Bruyne are the most high-profile exits, and the only ones from the starting XI, with Walker now at Burnley and De Bruyne team-mates with McTominay and Hojlund at Napoli.

On the bench, Scott Carson left but is seeking a new club, as exclusively revealed by SunSport.

Manuel Akanji and Jack Grealish both left on loan to Inter Milan and Everton respectively, while Julian Alvarez forced a transfer to Atletico Madrid after the Cup final.

The rest, including City goalscorer Jeremy Doku, are hoping to be part of a new dynasty at the club.

In all, United and City spent the best part of a BILLION POUNDS – £819million to be exact – on new stars in the three transfer windows since the 2024 Wembley showpiece.

United are narrowly responsible for the majority of this spending, having spent £429m trying to build a new team, including £200m on a new attack this summer alone.

City have splashed £390m on their own rebuild, adding the physicality lost with the decline of De Bruyne, Walker and co.

The loss of Ballon d’Or winner Rodri to an ACL injury last season also doubtless hurt City, but his return will be like a key new signing this season.

And this Sunday, the two clubs will now need to put their money where their mouth is as they aim to kick-start their campaigns after stuttering starts to the season.
