But a deal fell through after United switched their focus to ‘problem areas’.
While the report does not specify what these problem areas were, United signed two midfielders in Sofyan Amrabat and Mason Mount, forward Rasmus Hojlund, goalkeeper Andre Onana and veteran defender Jonny Evans.
Given the problems in United’s midfield this season, fans expressed their frustration on Twitter at a deal for the midfielder falling through.
One fan posted in response to the news: “My club will never be serious.”
A second fan chimed in on the replies to agree and said: “They are not serious people”, echoing a quote from Succession.
Another fan expressed anger that the club had “Signed Mount for 60 mill instead.”
A fourth wrote: “Why miss the opportunity, next 5 years u will hear, he is worth 100 million then we will be interested.”
United go into the international break off the back of a dramatic 2-1 win against Brentford.

Substitute Scott McTominay scored two stoppage time goals to flip the game on its ahead when United looked certain to lose.
McTominay was a player on the chopping block for United this summer and his sale could have funded the purchase of Menino.
Menino has played 193 times for Palmeiras, scoring 15 times and registering 17 assists.
He’s a midfielder known for recycling the ball in midfield and allowing his team’s to keep hold of the ball.
Menino can also operate as a right-back, an area where United have struggled with injury this year.
