MANCHESTER UNITED have been experimenting with their academy team with the use of ‘bio banding’,

This method is a process of grouping athletes based on attributes associated with growth and maturation rather than age.

According to The Mail, United coaches put together a “bio banding week” in which players were grouped together during training and in-house games based on physical maturity.

And it proved to be a “big success”, which comes as no surprise as the Red Devils have benefitted from it for several seasons now.

Bio banding can be especially helpful for late developing players as they are paired up with players of similar physical stature.

It also helps more physical players who are matched with team-mates of similar physiques.

Thus, both those powerhouses will have to rely on technique rather than strength when they face off.

The data gathered from that initiative are expected to boost development through the age groups.

United‘s senior team has promoted several youth players in the last couple of years.

Alejandro Garnacho and most recently Facundo Pellistri have been established in Erik ten Hag’s squad.

Hannibal Mejbri has also been following in Garnacho and Pellistri’s footsteps.

Dan Gore and Omari Forson have also been added to Ten Hag‘s squad this season.

This also comes amid an injury crisis that required players to fill in the gaps.
