SENNE LAMMENS arrived at Manchester United ahead of some high-profile targets.
The 23-year-old, an £18million arrival from Royal Antwerp, comes in with Ruben Amorim’s side in crisis between the sticks.

Andre Onana has let the team down time and time again with a catalogue of errors, while Altay Bayindir looks nervous any time a ball comes close to him.
United have consequently been pursuing a goalkeeper for much of the summer, with both Aston Villa‘s Emiliano Martinez and former Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma linked.
However, Red Devils transfer chiefs ultimately never made a bid for Martinez, while reported interest in Donnarumma was swiftly denied by the club before the 26-year-old completed his own deadline day switch to cross-town rivals Manchester City for £26m.
In terms of reputation, both Martinez, 33, and Donnarumma, 26, have the CV to play for United, with the former being a World Cup winner and the latter being a key part of the PSG team which lifted the Champions League in May.
But the Old Trafford faithful will instead be trusting Lammens to be their saving grace between the sticks this season.
The Belgian has been tipped to be the successor to Real Madrid‘s Thibaut Courtois for the national team, having been named in the Red Devils squad for the first time in March.
Lammens described his transfer as a “dream come true”, and United fans will be in dreamland if he can end the club’s goalkeeper nightmare.
But what do the numbers say about him compared to his new team-mates and those top keepers United were linked with?

For a start, the numbers indicate Lammens has been quite the busy bee in goal since the start of last season, facing significantly more shots on target (5.31 per 90 minutes) than any of the others.
By comparison, Martinez has faced 3.95 shots on target per 90, Onana 3.91, Donnarumma 3.18 and Bayindir 3.86.
Because of this he has naturally made many more saves than his fellow selected goalkeepers, but remarkably still has a save percentage of 76.57 per cent.
Martinez is second on that list with a save rate of 68.06 per cent, although current United No1 Bayindir has comparatively saved just 48.15 per cent of the shots he has faced.
Lammens’ 10 league clean sheets also means he has more than his selected rivals, with Martinez keeping eight, Donnarumma keeping four and Onana, 29, and Bayindir, 27, keeping 10 between them.
And that also extends in general to how many goals he has conceded per 90.
Only Donnarumma’s 1.08 goals conceded per 90 is better than Lammens own 1.2 per 90, while Martinez and Onana both have 1.26 and Bayindir 1.86.
But he will be judged on more than just his shot-stopping at United.
Being able to patrol the area outside of his area with his sweeping and his distribution will also be key factors in whether he makes the cut long-term.
Per 90 minutes, Lammens sweeps significantly less than the likes of Martinez and even Bayindir, with the Belgian putting up 0.29 sweeps per 90 compared to 0.66 by Martinez and 0.43 by Bayindir.
However, Lammens actually has the edge when it comes to successful long passes.
He has produced 7.36 successful long passes per 90. Only Bayindir (5.57) and Martinez (5.64) are close to him, while Onana’s 4.53 and Donnarumma’s 2.67 pale in comparison.
But perhaps most crucially, the numbers suggest Lammens is not particularly error prone.
Donnarumma, according to the numbers by Opta Joe, has not made a single error leading to a shot since the start of last season.
Man Utd’s transfer deals

That exemplary record is not matched by his fellow goalkeepers, with Onana miraculously the second best in terms of error leading to shots, including goals, with 0.12 per 90.
Lammens is marginally worse than this with 0.13 per 90, but is then significantly better than fellow United keeper Bayindir on 0.29.
Delving into the more nerdy numbers, Lammens also has an extremely impressive goals prevented figure of 18.65 – meaning he has saved that many more goals than he would be expected to concede based on the quality of the shots he has faced.
By comparison, Onana has saved 1.53 more, while Bayindir is has a goals prevented value of 1.31.
Villa goalkeeper Martinez is also above average with a value of 1.52 but City new-boy Donnarumma is under the average by -3.62.
Of course, the numbers only tell part of the story, and there will be a myriad of different variables in determining Lammens success at Old Trafford for the upcoming season and beyond.
And he could be thrown in at the deep end with the Manchester Derby coming up after the international break before hosting Chelsea and an away trip to Brentford.
Those games could be a real baptism of fire for the young goalie, but fans will doubtless have more patience for him than for the error-prone pair who have played between the sticks over the last two seasons.
