Man Utd vs Arsenal preview
It’s a battle of the heavyweights as Manchester United and Arsenal reignite their fierce rivalry at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon – the second time in English league history United are hosting the Gunners in their first game of the season.
And this one feels like it means more than just three points.
It’s a chance to set the tone for the 2025/26 campaign – with United eager to prove last season’s nightmare is behind them, while Arsenal need to show they’re finally ready to go one better than a second-placed finish.
Last season was nothing short of a nightmare for the hosts.
Manchester United slumped to a 15th-place finish – their lowest-ever points tally in the Premier League era – crashed out of all domestic competitions, and ended the campaign with a Europa League final defeat to rivals Tottenham.
But there have been some changes at Old Trafford – and significant ones at that.
The Red Devils have splashed nearly £200million on new recruits, bringing in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko to inject some much-needed firepower into Ruben Amorim’s squad.
And there have been encouraging signs too, with United unbeaten in pre-season, winning three and drawing two of their five fixtures while scoring nine goals in the process.
Another positive heading into this clash: United have lost just two of their last 18 Premier League home games against Arsenal (W10 D6).
As for Arsenal, they’re coming off a third consecutive runners-up finish in the Premier League and will be desperate to finally take that extra step.
They’ve certainly been busy in the transfer market – completing six signings before returning from their pre-season tour.
In total, they’ve spent around £185million on marquee arrivals such as Viktor Gyokeres, Martín Zubimendi, and Noni Madueke, while adding solid squad depth with the signings of Kepa Arrizabalaga, Christian Norgaard, and Cristhian Mosquera.
A mixed pre-season ended on a high note with an impressive 3-0 win over Athletic Bilbao at the Emirates, and there’s reason for optimism if they can carry that momentum into Sunday’s clash – especially given they went unbeaten in their final 14 Premier League away games last season (W7 D7).

The 23-year-old England international has consistently thrived in a side without a recognised No.9, and the arrival of Viktor Gyokeres should earn Saka even more space and freedom to operate down the right.

Despite Manchester United’s attacking overhaul this summer, questions still linger over their defence.
The Red Devils conceded 54 goals in the Premier League last season, failed to keep a clean sheet in four of their five pre-season fixtures, and allowed 43 shots at goal across those friendlies.
That could spell trouble against Arsenal’s new No.9 Viktor Gyokeres. The Swede has been the top scorer across Europe’s top 10 leagues over the last two seasons, netting a staggering 68 goals in 66 Primeira Liga appearances for Sporting.
