Man Utd vs Fulham preview

Manchester United and Fulham clash for the third time this season in Sunday’s FA Cup fifth-round showdown at Old Trafford.

The holders, who defeated arch-rivals Manchester City in last year’s final, are the second-most successful side in the competition’s history having won it 13 times.

But despite their pedigree, United sit behind Manchester City, Aston Villa, Newcastle and Bournemouth in the betting odds to win the FA Cup outright.

And that’s perhaps unsurprising given their position in the Premier League and overall inconsistency on the pitch.

Ruben Amorim’s side are sat in 14th position with 33 points – 13 behind Chelsea in the final Champions League position.

They have won two of their last five matches, although those victories came against relegation candidates Leicester and Ipswich Town – conceding in both.

Nobody is too sure if Manchester United can build on their midweek win, but there’s some optimism given the FA Cup seems to bring the best out of the Red Devils.

United have progressed from each of their last 14 FA Cup fifth round ties, and have reached the quarter-final of the competition in nine of the last 10 campaigns.

They also boast a terrific record against Fulham.

United have have progressed from their last nine FA Cup ties against Fulham, and they’ve also lost just one of their last 21 meetings with the Cottagers in all competitions (W17 D3) – including beating them 1-0 in both Premier League meetings this season.

As for Marco Silva’s side, they moved into ninth and boosted their hopes of European football next season after beating Wolves earlier this week.

Silva made five changes to his starting XI with the likes of Alex Iwobi, Raul Jimenez, Antonee Robinson and Calvin Bassey getting a rest.

They should return for a Fulham side who have never won the competition, and lost to West Ham in their only ever appearance in the final in 1975.

Man Utd vs Fulham preview betting tips and predictions

Jimenez to shine

Fulham striker Raul Jimenez should return to the starting XI for this contest following his 20-minute cameo against Wolves midweek. The Mexico international, 33, has struck 11 goals this season – including one against Watford in his only FA Cup appearance of the campaign.

He’s netted five in 14 career appearances in the competition with one of those arriving against Manchester United to knock them out of the FA Cup in 2019.

Jimenez has had double the number of touches in the opposition than any of his colleagues over the last four league matches (30), while his 18 attempts at goal during that spell is 10 more than any other Fulham player with a shot every 14.7 minutes.

Carded

Probably best to keep this simple… Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte looks likely to see yellow at some point during Sunday’s clash.

He’s already notched up TEN bookings for the Red Devils in 31 appearances in all competitions – including one against Fulham back when they met in January.

Nobody on the pitch committed more than Ugarte’s three fouls that evening, while nobody in the Manchester United squad can better his seven fouls in the last 334 minutes of league action.
