Northamptonshire Police were called by East Midlands Ambulance service shortly after 6.30am on the morning of Friday, August 1.

They were called to a canal footpath behind Auctioneers Court after reports that a man in his 50s had been found on a bench fatally injured.

The man’s family are being supported by specialist officers.

A murder investigation has now been sparked by the force which has seen the River Nene closed to pedestrians and river traffic between London Road bridge and Nunn Mills Road bridge.

They said the river will likely remain closed until Tuesday evening while searches take place.

Northamptonshire Police have also appealed to those living in nearby apartments overlooking the River Nene.

Those with any information or video footage have been urged to get in contact with the police.

No arrests have yet been made.

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Inspector Torie Harrison, from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit, said on Friday: “Officers have been in the area today carrying out house-to-house enquiries and have spoken with a number of people.

“However, we are continuing to appeal for witnesses to come forward and we’re particularly keen to locate any CCTV or other camera footage of the nearby area.

“Any information, no matter how small, can help us piece together exactly what happened.”
