According to the Northern Echo, Hackney is set to hold talks with Ipswich over personal terms following their successful £20m bid.
However, the midfielder’s future is still thought to be up in the air, as it is unclear if he will opt for a move to the Tractor Boys or stay put and assess other options.
Hackney hasn’t been short of suitors over the summer with Premier League clubs like Everton, Crystal Palace and West Ham all linked with a switch.
He was even subject to a rejected bid from European giants Porto in January.
It is thought that Ipswich are the only club to table an official offer so far this summer.
Kieran McKenna‘s side, who were relegated from the Premier League last term, are said to be willing to offer Hackney £35,000 per week – a significant pay rise on his terms on Teesside.
Should a deal go through, it would become a record fee for a signing by a Championship club – surpassing the £16m Burnley paid for Mike Tresor in 2024.
Ipswich have reportedly offered to pay a significant chunk of the £20m fee up front.
Hackney made 43 appearances in the Championship last season, scoring five times and registering three assists in the process.
The rising star has missed some of Boro’s pre-season action already through a knee problem and is expected to miss tonight’s friendly against Hartlepool United.
His current contract at the Riverside Stadium runs until the summer of 2027.
