MODEL makers were downcast after finding a magazine subscription to build a Lancaster bomber costs £1,415.70 to complete.
The first issue is £1.99 and the second a “special price” of £6.99 — before it is hiked up to £10.99 for the remaining 128 editions.
A magazine subscription to recreate a Lancaster Bomber will cost more than £1,400 to complete
It means weekly buyers will have to wait 2½ years before finally being able to finish their pricey World War Two project in mid-2026.
Eagle-eyed viewers were shocked to read the small print in a 20-second Hachette Partworks TV advert screened over the New Year.
One wrote online: “I’d expect an actual Lancaster bomber.
“Quick internet search reveals that model shops appear to sell a 1:32 scale Lancaster bomber for between £300-£400.”
Another said: “Probably didn’t cost much more than that for the real thing in 1942.”
The authentic 1:32 scale diecast Dambuster model features remote controlled propellers, landing gear, lights, guns with sound effects and has a wingspan of almost a metre.
One tempted fan said: “It’s probably easier to sneak £10.99 a month past the wife than blowing £1,400 in one go!”
Another said: “I’d want a real one and the pilot to fly me around for that money.”
A spokeswoman for the magazine’s publishers, Hachette Partworks, said: “We have spent two years developing this exclusive collection to make sure of its authenticity and quality.
“Our model is a large scale model (wingspan just under 1 metre) with many interactive features.
“Each issue is accompanied by a magazine with detailed step-by-step instructions as well as a comprehensive history of the Lancaster Bomber.
“We bring a highly detailed model to our customers, allowing them to build it easily and step-by-step on a weekly frequency.
“We are very proud of this new collection and we have already had very positive feedback from our model making community.”
