The men and a teenage boy have admitted their part in the massive fight where knives, metal poles and a sword were used outside a kebab shop and convenience store.

Four men were injured in the bloody battle – and some of the accused in court were bandaged after shoppers in the crowded street were shocked at the violence.

Busy Commercial Road in the centre of Newport, Gwent – just a short distance from the city’s main police station – was closed for three hours after the bloody brawl.

A court heard the “large-scale violent outbreak” was linked to an alleged dispute between two families in the city’s Pill docklands.

The central area around Commercial Street leading to the city’s rundown docklands has been dubbed one of Britain’s worst high streets – with many shops closed.

One local said: “It is terrible around here and getting worse.”

The warring family members, aged between 17 and 52, all from Newport admitted the charge at Cardiff Crown Court.

The seven admitted using or threatening unlawful violence with others present, causing those who were present to fear for their safety.

It included three members of the Aksoy family – Mehmet, 52, Mazhar, 40, and Murat, 28, and Burak Aksoy, 25.

It also included three of the Sayak family – Savas, 33, Yagmur 42, and Firat, 45.

A 17-year-old who cannot be named due to legal reasons also admitted the charge.

All were aided by a Turkish interpreter in court.

Prosecutor Catherine Markowski said the Commercial Street fight last Friday afternoon resulted in “serious injuries to people using weapons such as knives and metal poles”.

Chief Superintendent John Davies said: “I hope that these charges show our communities that we are heavily invested in responding to and investigating reports of crime and that we are committed to helping keep the streets of Gwent safe.

“A large number of officers have worked tirelessly to investigate and secure these charges, and we will continue to work with our partners to identify the issues and tackle the causes surrounding this incident.”

The adult defendants were remanded in custody, the youth defendant was released on bail and ordered not to attend Commercial Road.

They are all due to be sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court in November.
