Nearly 40 people clambered into a black rubber dinghy to embark on the dangerous 21-mile crossing.

Three people already on board raced to meet them as evil people smugglers tried to evade French police.

An onlooker said: “It looked like a new tactic.

“The group were all hanging around on the beach.

“The dinghy came from nowhere.”

Five boats in total are believed to have been intercepted in the Channel by Border Force officers, who brought one group into Dover at 9.13am.

It wasn’t clear if any of those pictured on the sand dunes in Sangatte – including the crying boy – were among those seen later at coming ashore at Dover but sources said it’s likely they would have been.

It comes after a woman, thought to be a 24-year-old from Eritrea, was found dead on a beach near Calais on Tuesday.

Official figures show 24,208 migrants have crossed the Channel so far this year – with 4,107 arriving in September alone in 74 boats.

A record 45,755 made the same perilous journey last year compared to 28,526 in 2021 and just 8,410 in 2020
