The Champions League returns to our screens as Aston Villa clash with Monaco at the picturesque Stade Louis II.

And they’ll arrive hoping to consolidate their position in the automatic qualification places after a terrific start to their campaign.

Unai Emery’s side are currently in fifth position having taken 13 points from a possible 18 in their first six fixtures, which includes a seismic win over Bayern Munich.

Aston Villa have won three of their last four, and pulled off a terrific comeback from a two-gaol deficit against Arsenal over the weekend to move them to within two points of the top four.

They also have the trump card in manager Emery, who has won each of his last six games against Monaco across all competitions, with the aggregate scoreline of those games being 23-4.

Only Atalanta (9), Liverpool (9) and Feyenoord (7) have won more points in Champions League away games so far this season than Aston Villa (6), who have scored exactly three goals in their two away victories in the competition.

It’s a bit of a different story for the hosts.

Monaco were unbeaten in their opening four games in the UCL this season, but have since lost the last two against Benfica and Arsenal.

They form has dropped off a cliff in recent months, winning just two of their last 11 games in all competitions (L7, D2).

Adi Hutter’s side have dropped to fourth in Ligue 1, exited the Coupe de France to Reims, lost in the French Super Cup final to PSG over the last month and blew a one-goal advantage against rock-bottom Montpellier last time out.
