A MOTORWAY close to a major UK airport has been shut in both directions after a collision.

The M42 is closed between Junction 14 at Tonge and the end of the route where it merges with the M1 at J23a, Leicestershire Police said.

Cops have advised motorists to find alternative routes as traffic continues to build up.

The road lies just two miles south of East Midlands Airport and connects the busy hub to Birmingham and the West Midlands.

National Highways said the route was closed due to a “serious collision” and expects traffic to clear by 7.30pm.

It added there were currently delays of 40 minutes against expected traffic, with both lanes shut in both directions.

The M1 southbound exit slip road at Junction 23a has also been closed due to the collision.

Traffic maps from National Highways indicate that cars are queuing up as far back as Junction 12 heading northbound on the M42.

Additionally, the M1 southbound has ground to near-halt in the run up to Junction 24 and 23a.

In a post on X, National Highways said: “The M42 is closed northbound between Junction 14 and the M1/A453 at East Midlands Airport due to a serious collision.

“Traffic has also been stopped on the southbound carriageway to allow emergency services to work at the scene.”
