Their daughter Virginia has been charged with murder
They were last seen alive in August 2018, with their daughter Virginia McCullough, 35, now charged with murder.
An inquest today heard how a provisional cause of death for Lois was given as “stab wounds to the chest”.
Further tests are being carried out on John to establish how he was killed.
Essex area coroner Michelle Brown adjourned the inquest “pending the outcome of the police investigation”.
Cops were called to the couple’s home in Chelmsford, Essex, on September 15 following a concern for welfare report.
They later discovered the pair in a top-floor bedroom at the three-storey end-of-terrace house.
The Sun revealed how police had visited the home on August 18 after McCullough claimed she had been assaulted.
Officers interviewed her unaware the bodies were upstairs but no search was carried out as there was no indication anything suspicious.
Essex Police carried out a review and concluded the female officer who interviewed McCullough had done nothing wrong.
McCullough has been remanded into custody ahead of a provisional trial date of May 13 next year.
She is accused of killing her parents between August 21, 2018, and September 15, 2023.
In a statement, John and Lois’ family said they were “deeply shocked” by their deaths.
